Wizard 101 is an online multiplayer game aimed for kids and is similar in play to Magic the Gathering. These cards cannot be bought, but more are granted as gameplay proceeds to higher levels. Each wizard can specialized in a specific type of magic, such as Ice or Fire. A secondary school is also available to get other cards. For monthly subscription, this game is $10 a month, although you can try it out for free. If you subscribe for a long period of time, then the price is much lower.
The game has a simple yet elegant style of playing. Each spell costs a certain amount of power points. The more powerful the spell is, the more points it will consume. Power Points can be built up at the rate of 1 each turn. However, buffing spells thrown at you does not cost any points. So much of the playing revolves on casting debuffs and buffs to build up points so an appropriate damage spell can be chosen. There is quite a bit of tension involved while playing, and it is important to get the right mix of damage spells and debuff/buff spells. The game play is based on turns, with four players on every side. Other people can also join the battles, and monsters can join as well.
The graphics for Wizard 101 is very well made with clean, colorful, crisp, and cartoony features. It is a game made for children, so the graphics are not cutting edge in quality, but the style of art more than makes up for the quality. The players and their gear look good, and the card animations and monsters are very well done. This is a fantasy world to the artwork is done in a similar fashion and the designers obviously didn’t try to make this world realistic.
The system for character creation is done with a series of questions. In the beginning, you can shape your character to have various looks, features, and powers. The naming system is also quite impressive. You choose your first name, and then two parts of a last name, this system is easy to use and makes character creation quite simple. Overall, Wizard 101 is a great game to play, it is very stable with very few problems.
