Some pieces of jewellery have more staying power than others – this is a simple fact of the jewellery world. However, these days, even these “classic” pieces of jewellery have started to become less popular – but many of them still refuse to go away entirely.
Take, for example, the classic gold wedding ring – this will almost never go away. Recently the trend has changed, and white gold has become far more popular (as far as wedding rings, at least) than the more traditional yellow gold, but the fact is that gold wedding rings remain a driving force in the jewellery world, and account for a sizable portion of sales.
Similarly, you have other classic designs such as the gold bangle or hoop earring, which just refuse to go away. In fact, even after everyone became sick of them due to seeing them everywhere, a lot of jewellers just shifted to making them from more exotic and hard-to-find metals such as platinum and rhodium. These are much more expensive than the classic stainless steel hoop earring, of course, but for whatever reason, the customers that buy them do not seem to mind the price very much.
And then, of course, there is the classic gold locket – the one piece of jewellery that almost every woman should own. The gold lockets were popularized through a variety of channels – Disney movies, for example, added hugely to their popularity and appeal, especially with the teenage girl demographic. The gold locket, in fact, is probably one of the few examples of an article of jewellery that just refuses to reduce in popularity. While many pieces of jewellery suffer from the fact that they become so classic that they suddenly start being referred to as “boring”, “plain” and “dull”, gold lockets do not seem to have gone through any similar reduction in popularity or desirability. It is difficult to say why, but most experts in the jewellery world do not expect this to change anytime soon, if ever
