Many women struggle with the likelihood of being ripped off every time they go to the mechanic for car servicing. Very few people enjoy being in a vulnerable and helpless situation, and getting your car fixed is one of those situations. The problem is the vast imbalance in who has vital information, and when this happens, there can often be unscrupulous tactics used to extract as much money as possible from the person who isn’t educated.
Women have overcome almost all areas of discrimination, but unfortunately, in the car workshop it is still the way it was 50 years ago. I have many female friends (and quite a few males) who have been done over by a dodgy mechanic. They learn the bad habits from older mechanics, and unfortunately, it’s the way they do business and end up depending on them to get by. There are some out there who are honest, but they are few and far between, and often extremely rare. They charge more, but at least you know what you’re getting.
Tips to Follow When Going to a New Mechanic for Car Servicing
It’s important to sound like you know what they’re talking about. They’ll probably try and use a couple of technical words regarding certain parts. It’s very important to know exactly what you want done to it when you take it in for a service. Be sure they will find something else that needs doing to it if let them, but that’s the last thing you want.
Rather, go in with your owner’s manual, and know exactly what you need doing to it, and don’t let them sell you on any other repairs. Let it break, unless it’s something like a timing belt (which usually have a standard life expectancy), as you would be better off getting if fixed when it breaks than paying a bunch of cash for things you don’t have to.
