After some time I am starting to consider myself something of a professional blogger. I have made a little bit of money which has given the family treats. I have even been able to start giving out a little bit of advice to friends about how they could start blogging and making some money.
With that in mind, I thought I would share my insights thus far.
So what kind of attributes do you need to become a professional blogger?
A really cool idea
Do you know how many great ideas there are in the world every day? Just count how many you have, and the multiply it by your best guess at the current earthly population, that’s how many. But how many of those ideas actually get put into practice? Hardly any. So the first tip is, have a cool idea and then do something about it. You could blog about anything from cycling through to writing home accounting software reviews or even magic the gathering.
But you can’t just write anything.
It has to be commercial
What do I mean? Firstly, that there are enough people looking for it online to make it worth your while writing about it. There is little point in writing about the best orange dots to stick on your fridge if no one is looking for them. Money in blogging means a combination of people looking, and whether or not there is money in the industry.
Is it too hard to get into?
Whilst orange dots is pretty easy, that is because there is hardly any profit to be made. If instead you look at the credit card industry then immediately you would see that it is very lucrative – thousands of searches online everyday, and loads of money in it. Unfortunately the landscape is swallowed up by thousands of people helping some very big companies rank really high in the search engines, which means that you probably won’t make money from it…try something easier.
Keep going!
It sometimes can get lonely, boring and frustrating knowing that you have to keep producing content over and over. You will be writing about different things, but sometimes you just want a night off. Here’s my top tip: do loads when you feel motivated, and keep it on your computer so that the days you don’t want to do anything, you can just lay it down to one side and not worry, and just upload it at your own pace. Even better, if you are using wordpress then you can schedule it.
So in conclusion, if you are looking to be a professional blogger, then make sure people are looking for what you want to write about, and there is money in the industry like magic the gathering. That you aren’t trying to break into an industry where there are lots of big guns already. And that you keep going, even when you don’t feel up to it: make use of the time you really feel like writing to produce as much content as you can and then save it for the days you can’t get any good ideas.
